Describe Your Market

Team Challenge

What is your market? And what is the particular niche you will pursue? For example, if you were to build a solar-powered car, you would be entering the automobile market and perhaps looking to sell your vehicle in regions with lots of sun. Or perhaps your niche would be selling to people of a certain income or people who live in cities.

Resources

Check out Global Resources for "Economic Balances" links. Look at this World Clock, which is one of several links in the "World Flatteners" section. Take a look at the NYNAX Directory Explore global social and economic relationships and world development issues using the Google Gapminder Tool.  (We can teach you how to make a cool interactive graphic like this using the Google "Motion Chart" gizmo. Just ask!)

Process

BASIC LEVEL Remember to think about who is doing what on the team. (You will get very tired of hearing us say this over and over, but believe it, teams that do this are always among the winners!) Communicate a LOT, but do not wait for others to "approve" things. Move forward and propose things, and always encourage the others to do the same. Comment on what is good about what they've done and then add and shape that to make it better! Encourage each member to take leadership in thinking about how things are going and what you do to improve working together and producing great results!

  • Task Leader, (Research Team Leader, Team Leader)
  • Documentation (writing, editing, putting things together, linking to standards)
  • Resources (finds and gets stuff)
  • Evaluation and team reflection role (process monitor role)

Describe how this market works. Who buys what from whom. Do customers go to a store, or shop online, or is your solution "wrapped up" in something else they buy? Make a list of the biggest, most successful companies already in this market and approximately how much money flows into this market. (Think big. Think global. Use round numbers and state your guesses and assumptions.) How do other businesses in this sector do things? How will your team do it better?
