Portable Biomass-to-Synfuel Production System
This mini-van sized portable refinery converts many forms of biomass into several varieties of synthetic fuel, such as gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel, which are completely carbon neutral and can reduce vehicle emissions by at least 90%. A novel molten iron gasification process enables it to convert a much greater variety of feedstock than into syngas (hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide) than other gasification systems. Its innovative design involving a microchannel reactor makes possible its compactness and efficiency, and the use of microchannels allows for much greater control over the forms of the hydrocarbons being produced.

Our project proposal is a water tank product based on the fundamental concept of harvesting rainwater. Our team is proposing that this water tank be fitted with a water filter system inside and solar panels outside for the purpose of purifying the rainwater.
Since we are using solar energy to kill the bacteria in the rainwater, our team decided to name our product "Rain In The Sun Box."

Current Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs - allow the conversion of waste into useful energy) designs have to be improved to maximize power output, reduce the installation and operation costs, and achieve high carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal efficiency. It has already been known that electricity generation varies depending on MFC configuration. For instance, a single chambed MFC with the cathode directly exposed to ambient air has proven to be more efficient than a two-chambered MFC. Having a proton exchange membrane is not essential as protons can also be conducted to the cathode through water. An alternative has to be found to replace platinum coating of the cathode, which is very costly.

Our project explores the possibility of extracting pure and clean hydrogen from bacteria(Rhodobacter sphaeroides) and a small amount of electric current, using a Microbial Electrolysis Cell(MEC).The process would produce pure hydrogen that can be converted into fuel for automobiles, with electricity being the major byproduct.Our method of hydrogen production also reduces the amount of greenhouse gases produced as compared to conventional commercial methods of hydrogen production.
