Can We Win the Global Warming Game?

Can you manage the economy of the European Union or Brazil for 100 years and guide it to a path of sustainable development? Play one or both of these games to find out!

Choose a game:

Climate Challenge Game (European Union)

The Global Warming Interactive Game (Brazil)

As you play, notice the physical, social and economic balances and forces that interact as you make policy decisions involving science, resources, economics and public opinion.  What do you observe?  What aspects of the global warming game were you able to "win"?  In what ways did you lose?  What management decisions were successful?  Why?  How does the game influence your thinking about climate change?

Use the above questions as a starting point to help you think about your experience playing these games. Motivated readers can deepen their understanding by also reading Engineering, the Environment and Sustainability by Dr. Domenico Grasso, the Dean of the University of Vermont College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.  He uses the concepts of Social, Physical and Economic Balances to underscore the idea of tradeoffs and why there are no unequivocal answers.
