Accomplishments and Priorities
Accomplishments
A close dialogue with our students has revealed that Students are attracted to the program due to a combination of
- Curiosity about climate change and the future
- Opportunity to make international friends
- Opportunity to win a competition
Upon completing the program, students note that they have significantly improved their knowledge of complex climate issues, and acquired skills required to work in international teams. Subsequent to the program many have decided to pursue a career related to environment varying from "Science Journalism" to "Environmental Engineering." Some have chosen to be an entrepreneur wherein they will create a business to address climate issues. To date, GCA has had:
- Approximately 2000 students enrolled in our program
- More than 400 students who successfully completed the program representing more than 50 countries
- Students devote over 75,000 hours outside of their school effort towards developing a global context, learning the topic of climate change and designing solutions to issues on global warming.
- More than 50 solutions designed to solve climate change issues evaluated by scientists and business people
- About $200,000 worth of student rewards in the form of college scholarships and summer institutes.
Some of the students have participated a second and third time during their high school years. Each student devotes an average of about 150 hours over a 6-9 month period to work on climate change project along with three other international students. So far student awareness of the program has only been through the leverage of the Internet.
Priorities
To extend our accmplishments to an even greater world-wide community of youth, we are looking forward to these new and expanded efforts this year.
- Scaling up the number of students who participate and are successful at the Global Challenge Award program
- Improving geographic reach and under-represented student communities that benefit from the program
- Providing additional content & project tracks to attract and engage both, students that are not as self motivated and those that are highly motivated
- Active engagement of Alumni to make this a Student's Program, Driven by Students
- Creating a community of educators, subject matter experts, leaders, corporations, government and other NGOs to entice participation, help shape the program there by meeting the needs they see it
